If you are a fan of classic lo-fi rock, look no further. Hailing from Phoenix, AZ, one-man band, Victims of the New Math (Thomas Young) may have the album of the year. With decades of experience, Young has been cultivating a sound that is both nostalgic & captivating. Starting his journey in the 1980s, he has been releasing music since 2006, and he has found a way to woo the hearts of those that are fans of his unique sound. Drawing inspiration from the 1970s, his sound is a more modern take on the classical sounds of the old-school. Although I’m new to him, I can say that he has won me over. Now, he enters our pages with his latest album, “I Will Be Your Blue Sky”.

“I Will Be Your Blue Sky” is the latest album from Victims of the New Math, and it is carried by 10 beautifully crafted songs. The 10-tracks are laced with guitars, synths, crackles, and some cool surprises. For me, I’m a huge fan of concept albums, and I found this LP to be very cohesive. Touching on themes of loss, loneliness, rejection, and love, Victims of the New Math craft an album that is relatable to all. The ability to make music that connects is such a beautiful thing, and it was surely achieved on this album.

For me, I loved how each song builds on the previous. It almost felt like I was putting together a story with each song. The lyrics were raw, and they evoked raw emotions that I have yet to feel from an album in a long time. My favorite records were “We Go Round”, “Radio Jets”, & “By Ourselves”. Each of those songs have a special place in my heart. Overall, this is one of the best sonic experiences that I have been able to listen to this year. So, stream the album below and vibe out!

More Info From Thomas Young:

“Victims of the New Math is a one-man band, with me (Thomas Young) playing all the instruments, and writing and arranging all of the songs. My major influences are the Beatles, Guided By Voices, the Flaming Lips, and lots of smaller bands I've connected with over the years (Mythical Motors and Pink Moc are two I am really enjoying right now).”
